June 17 2012

Today is a Freitag for us and I decided to stay in Wittenberg instead of going somewhere. Kelly was right, there is nothing going on here on Sundays. Everything is closed. I biked into Wittenberg at about 1pm, parked my bike in the Leucorea, and walked around Wittenberg for an hour and a half. There are very few stores open, the one large Eis café near the markplatz is open, and there is a bakery open and some little things like that, but in general everything is closed, for example, the DM, the Apothekes, the clothing stores. However, what is interesting is there are still people walking around looking in the windows. I saw a lot of families and couples just meandering.  It didn’t matter that nothing was open. I never see that in the states.
I finally ended up at the Tierpark and watched the goats and monkeys for a while, so far this has been the busiest day I have seen there. A lot of people with their young kids, and a couple of older guys, that was slightly creepy, but I guess that is everywhere, not just in the states.
When I got back to the house I had waffles and coffee with my ghasteltern. I told them how my boyfriend and I have talked about coming back when we are done with school and going on the Elbe Radweg. They told me that there daughter lives just off of it and then my ghastmutter wanted to know if I wanted to ride there on the Elbe Radweg. So of course I said yes, and we went on an hour and a half bike ride. It is incredibly beautiful and I really want to try riding on it by myself at some time in the next couple of weeks.

  1. host family = Gastfamilie
That's really cool that your host mom went with you on a special trip so that you didn't spend the day with nothing to do. She really likes you.
